The ship was towed to Rotterdam in 1948 and kept afloat with pumps. With 3 fellow inmates he was able to flee sealed in a horizontal air shaft, as shown here, and jump overboard unnoticed before mooring. A fourth partially-initiated fellow inmate was late at the agreed meeting point. He then ran across the ship calling for Herrmann. He was arrested and unfortunately did not survive his captivity.<br \/>\nHe then came home from Rotterdam.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.k-wilhelms.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/sp16-ba-14-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image -2413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.k-wilhelms.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/sp16-ba-14-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\" 1516\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From 1953 he sailed with the German Levante Line in the Mediterranean area on the &#8220;Lebanon&#8221;. Coincidentally, a photo of the ship in Hamburg was used as the cover sheet for the book about ships.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.k-wilhelms.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Schiffe-Lebanon. jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.k-wilhelms.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Schiffe-Lebanon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1085\" height=\"1581\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later he drove on tugboats from the Unter Weser shipping company in Bremerhaven.<\/p>\n<p>In 1957, the film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0ALxQtGdVC8\">&#8220;Sharks and Small Fishes&#8221;<\/a> was also shot with the help and on board of Herrmann&#8217;s ship. See the movie in the link. The director Frank Wisbar found out about the pictures shown above and the escape and wanted to publish Hermann&#8217;s experiences in a film.
